The Attributes of God          by 'Abd al-Rahman ibn al-Jawzi, Abdullah bin Hamid 'Ali

 Paperback -xix + 169 pages

Daf' Shubah al-Tashbh is a critique, censure, and refutation of the historical anthropomorphic leanings of some of the Hanbali scholars and learned. At the same time, it is a vindication of Imam Ahmad ibn Hanbal May Allah be pleased with him from the accusations of the anthropomorphism as well as the claim by some Hanbalis, that he adopted anthropomorphic beliefs, similar to theirs. Unmistakably, this work is a polemical commentary on the problematic Qur'anic verses and hadiths that fall under the mutashabih (allegorical and ambiguous) Qur'anic verses and prophetic traditions composed by the author, 'Abd al-Rahman ibn al-Jawzi (d. 597 AH), the author of the well-acclaimed book, Talbis Iblis (The Devils' Deception).

Unlike other books of this genre, this book is significant in that Ibn al-Jawzi offers an incisive critique of scholars of his own school, for which in return, Ibn al-Jawzi was criticised by those Hanbali and Hanbali-leaning proponents.

This book is important for anyone who is constantly indulged in discussions and the study of polemical theology (kalam) and scriptural interpretation (ta'wil), but still have been unable to gain clarity concerning the reality and permissibility of ta'wil of the verses commonly refered to as 'The Attributes Verses' (Ayat Al-Sifat).

The appendix further clarifies the issue of scriptual interpretation, figurative language in both the Qur'an and Sunnah (Majaz), the proper intent behind the statement made by the salaf, & 'bila kayf' (Without 'How' as opposed to 'Without Modality or Description'), and an investigation into the ascription of Kitab al-Ibana to Imam Al-Ash'ari.

Readers who will derive the most benefit from this book are those who have been actively involved in the study of matters of interpretation and polemical theology. It also serves as an indispensable primer into one of the greatest debates that continued throughout much of Islam's medieval period, namely that of understanding the attributes of God.

DECIPHERING THE SIGNS OF GOD - A Phenomenological Approach to Islam

Paperback - xvii + 302 pages                                                                     Annemarie Schimmel

"This is one of Schimmel's most important books. It sums up a lifetime of scholarship on Islam and, more importantly, it puts her understanding of Islam into a phenomenological framework that will readily be appreciated by scholars and students of other religious traditions. It will be looked back upon as a landmark in bringing Islamic Studies into the mainstream of religious studies."-- William C. Chittick

The Qur'an constantly exhorts people to 'look at the signs of god,' signs that are hidden 'in the horizons and in themselves.' This book examines the mysteries of Islam using a phenomenological method to come closer to the true center of Muslim belief.

Schimmel takes as her starting point the simplest 'signs of god'-- natural phenomena like stones, plants and animals, and their use in religious and symbolic language. She then moves on to less obvious signs, such as sacred time and space, ritual actions, forms of worship, the sacred individual, and the order of the community. She concludes with an examination of the individual's response to the mystery of the Divine. Based on both original classical sources and modern literature, as well as the author's considerable personal experience, this is not only a fascinating survey of Islamic practices and beliefs, but also a broad and intregrated overview of the phenomenology of Islam.

Annemarie Schimmel was for many years Professor of Indo-Muslim Culture at Harvard University. She is author of numerous works, including Islam: An Introduction; and The Triumphal Sun: A Study of the Works of Jalaloddin Rumi, and the editor of the SUNY Press series, Muslim Spirituality in South Asia. Among the more unusual honours that have been awarded to her are the naming of a boulevard in Lahore, Pakistan, after her and the Levi Della Vida Medal for outstanding contributions to Islamic studies presented by the University of California.

Knowledge of God in Classical Sufism - Foundations of Islamic Mystical Theology

Paperback - 464 pages                                             by John Renard

Foundations of Islamic Mystical Theology - Classics of Western Spirituality Series

Synopsis :

This volume, the ninth on Islamic material to be published in the Classics of Western Spirituality series, brings to light a highly significant but little known area of Islamic spirituality.

Editor John Renard has assembled here a volume of texts, most translated here for the first time, culled from the great Sufi manuals of spirituality, on the theme of the complex and multi-faceted role of knowledge in relation to the spiritual life.

He presents excerpts on knowledge from the works of nine major Muslim teachers, most translated from Arabic, but also including important texts from Persian originals.

The Introduction offers a survey of the development of Sufi modes of knowing through the thirteenth century in their broader context, and then focuses on the manuals or compendia of Sufi spirituality treated here. Historical notes provide brief identifications of many of the individual sources and personalities mentioned throughout the treatises.

Tawakkul : Sincere Reliance & Trust in Almighty Allah

Paperback Booklet - 24 pages                                       by Mahomed Farhaad Ibrahim Ashrafi

In today's time, with the amount of insecurity and fear displayed by the large majority of people, it is vitally important that Islamic ideals and ideas are explained and propagated.

One such belief is ''sincere reliance and trust'' in the Divinely ordained destiny of humanity and the sincere belief that whatever we receive and whatever we give in return is certainly recorded in the Court of The Almighty and that we would certainly be questioned about our actions in this world.

A Commentary on 'al-Murshid al-Mu'in' of Ibn al-Ashir

A lucid and profound exposition of the gnostic science that lies at the heart of Sufism. A Guide Book to Khalwa, spiritual retreat, preparing the murid by the doctrine of the Unity for the experiences that will befall him in the self-shattering annihilation he desires (meaning -- the spiritual elevation coupled with ridding oneself of his ego & living a Godly, saintly, peaceful life).

Shaykh al-Alawi has taken
ibn al-Ashir's verse poem, and made it a vehicle for making plain the unitary knowledge, the hidden doctrine, that lies beneath ever phenomenon of outer wisdom. Thus he is able to unveil from even the lowest functions of cleaning the body an exalted meaning which indicates the Oneness of his Lord.

This book of action constantly returns the Gnostic traveler to slavehood, covering over his secrets and concealing the intoxicating knowledge that he gained. It confirms the simple qualities of correct moral behaviour that are the hallmarks of the great.

The Refutation Of Him [Ibn Taymiyya] Who Attributes Direction To Allah -

Al Raddu Ala Man Qala Bil Jiha      by Ibn Jahbal Al Kilabi     -   Translation By Gibril Fouad Haddad

  Hardback - 352 pages

This short theological tract, Fi Nafi al-Jiha, or On Denying Direction to God, by the Ashari theologian and celebrated Shafi'i jurist, Qadi Ibn Jahbal (d. 733/1333), is a clinical rebuttal of the controversial fatwa, the Aqida Hamawiyya, penned by his legendary contemporary, Ibn Taymiyya (d. 728/1328). It is considered, rightly, a classic manifesto of anti-literalism, which will be an indispensable reference for advanced students of Islamic theology, other professional theologians, and modern academics needing primary source materials in English or a source book on the controversies surrounding Ibn Taymiyya's theology.

This same work embodies, moreover, a contemporary exercise in polemic representing the longstanding views in the conformist tradition of Muslim theology, whether via
ta'wil or tafwid, and whether in the schools of the Ash'aris, Maturidis or Hanbalis. In particular, it pits itself against one of the two opposite non-conformist readings of the Quran and Sunna; and in general, it highlights the pitfalls of a literalistic mindset which plagues all scripturally-based religions.                                       Muhammad Afifi al-Akiti
                                                                                                                         Research Fellow in Islamic Theology,
Oxford Centre for Islamic Studies, Oxford University

The learned Dr. Gibril Fouad Haddad merits the rewards of the one who corrects the errors which crept into some minds in the Ummah, reminding them once again of the saving, mainstream discourse of the Ummah in the understanding of the most fundamental matters of the faith, guaranteed by Allah to exist until the end of time. May Allah reward him most abundantly for his enterprise!

His translation of Ibn Jahbal al-Kilabi's
al-Raddu 'ala Man Qala bil-Jiha is elegant and accurate, marked by a strong sense of spiritual propriety toward the scholarly personages of the Ummah. The copious notes are illuminating. It will be one of the most important books on this subject for many decades to come, Allah willing. The publisher is to be congratulated for bringing out a work of such sterling scholarly merits.                                                         Muhammad 'Uthman El-Muhammady

Harun Yahya
The intention of this book is to enable us to see the Miracle of Creation in things we often encounter in the world around us, but to which we give no special thought. Perusal and understanding this book will be important steps in arriving at an understanding of the Creator. ''Great Books of the Islamic World''

Translated by Aisha Bewley, Edited by Laleh Bakhtyar

This book is translation of several chapters of Ibn al-Arabi's Futuhat al-Makkiyyya, the Mysteries of bearing Witness to the Oneness of God and Prophethood of Muhammad Salla Allahu ta'ala 'alayhi wa Sallam, which is the first pillar of Islam.

'' Ibn al-'Arabi's magnum opus, al-Futūhāt al-Makkiyya, 'The Meccan Openings', is known at least by name to all students of Sufism. In spite of its importance for Islamic thought in general, and Ibn al-'Arabi in particular, few scholars have taken advantage of its enormous riches because of the numerous difficulties connected with reading and understanding the text'' --- Professor William Chittick

Evolution Theory and Islam                           by by Nu Ha Mim Keller

Paperback booklet - 14 pages

Book Extract: Allah alone is Master of Existence. He alone causes all that is to be and not to be. Causes are without effect in themselves, but rather both cause and effect are created by Him. The causes and the effects of all processes, including those through which plant and animal species are individuated, are His work alone.

To ascribe efficacy to anything but His action, whether believing that causes (a) bring about effects in and of themselves; or (b) bring about effects in and of themselves through a capacity Allah has placed in them, is to ascribe associates to Allah (
shirk). Such beliefs seem to be entailed in the literal understanding of "natural selection" and "random mutation," and other evolutionary concepts, unless we understand these processes as figurative causes, while realizing that Allah alone is the agent. This is apart from the consideration of whether they are true or not.

The Name and the Named          by: Shaykh Tosun Bayrak al-Jerrahi al-Halveti

Paperback - 297 pages                                                       Foreward by:  William C. Chittick

The Divine Attributes of God

Product Description: In the Islamic Sufi tradition, it is said, "Qualify yourself with the qualities of God." ---- Compiled from classical Arabic and Turkish texts of Al-Ghazali, Ibn Arabi, Djili, and Abd al-Qadir Jilani, May Allah sanctify their secret, among others, these are the divine attributes by which God manifests Himself in the world and by which He completes the spiritual life of man.

In this volume,
Tosun Bayrak, a shaykh of the Jerrahi order based in Istanbul, explains how to use these Names for the transformation of the soul--"to see that the human being is the microcosm of the macrocosm where God's attributes are reflected." Sheikh Tosun describes the barrier, "they know the Name, but not the Named." How can one come to love God--without knowing Him? The Sheikh answers that we do so through knowing His Divine Qualities in our own selves. "To assume the angelic character which is innate but hidden in the human being, we have to choose from Divine Attributes as we can, and try to live our daily lives according to them. Then, God willing, this effort will help our imitation become real."   The Name and the Named presents these attributes which combine in various proportions to create the universe we see before us, but these names are all contained in the Name, or word Allah. Therefore, when one repeats this Name, one participates in stating the entire manifested creation. Also included are the 201 traditional names or qualities of the Prophet Muhammad, May Allah bless him and grant him peace.

Other interpreted and compiled works by Sheikh Tosun Bayrak include The Way of The Sufi Chivalry (
Kitab al-Futtuwah by Ibn al-Husayn al-Sulami), The Secret of Secrets: Hadrat 'Abd al-Qadir al-Jilani, Divine Governance of the Human Kingdom (At-Tadbirat al-ilahiyyah fi islah al-mamlakat al-insaniyyah by Ibn 'Arabi) and The Shape of Light (Hayakal Al-Nur by Suhrawardi), all available here at Madani Propagation.

William C. Chittick is Professor of Comparative Studies at State University of New York, Stony Brook. He has published numerous books, among them, Imaginal Worlds: Ibn al-'Arabi and the Problem of Religious Diversity; Faith and Practice of Islam: Three Thirteenth Century Sufi Texts; The Sufi Path of Knowledge: Ibn al-'Arabi's Metaphysics of Imagination; & The Sufi Path of Love: The Spiritual Teachings of Rumi.
