The Life & Times of Shaykh Nizam ud-Din Auliya : by Khaliq Ahmad Nizami
Hardback - 238 pages

One of the most charismatic personalities of South Asia, Shaykh Nizam-u'd-din Auliya Allah be pleased with him, was leader of the premier Chishtiya order in Delhi from 1244-1325. A scholar and a mystic he left a lasting impression on the life and thought, not only of his contemporaries, but also of subsequent generations. Renowned historian K.A. Nizami provides here an account of the saint's legacy and spiritual quest that displays documentary history at its best.
Nizami brings alive the story of the saint's life, from his birth into an immigrant Muslim family; his childhood as a fatherless boy; his growing up years in Delhi; to his work spread over sixty years. Arguably the most popular saint of the Delhi Sultanate, the Shaykh's role in the history of South Asia was of immense significance. Nizami judiciously sifts fact from fiction, through careful critical reading of records of conversation (malfuzat), biographical accounts (tazkirabs), letters, and early medieval manuscripts including the Qiwam-i'l-'Aqa'id used for the first time here to reconstruct the Shaykh's life. Nizam ad-Din Awliya : Morals of the Heart - ' Fawa'id al-Fu'ad '
Paperback - 404 pages

Shaykh Nizam ad-din Awliya (1242-1325), whose conversations are recorded in Fawa'id al-Fu'ad, is one of the seminal personalities in the history of the Islamic mystical movement in South Asia. For about half a century he lived and worked in Delhi to save humankind from sin and suffering. His efforts to inculcate in people a respect for moral and spiritual values had a deep and far-reaching impact on medieval Indian society. His message of humanism, love, and benevolence still echoes through the corridors of time. In the Tughluq dynasty Sultan Firuz Shah (ruled C.E. 1351-1388) addressed him as Sultan al-Masha'ikh (King of the mystic teachers). Ziya ad-din Barani, a renowned historian of the time, gives the following account of his popularity and influence:
Shaykh Nizam ad-din admitted [all sorts of people into his discipline]—nobles and plebeians, rich and poor, learned and illiterate, citizens and villagers, soldiers and warriors, free men and slaves. These people refrained from many improper things, because they considered themselves disciples of the Shaykh—[As a result of his teachings] the general public showed an inclination to religion and prayer. Men and women, young and old, shopkeepers and servants, children and slaves, all came [to the mosques] to say their prayers.... Many platforms with thatched roofs over them were constructed on the way from the city to Ghiyathpur; wells were dug, water-vessels were kept, carpets were spread, and a servant and a reciter of the Qur' an (hafiz) was stationed at every platform so that the people going to the Shaykh may have no difficulty in saying their supererogatory prayers. Owing to regard for the Shaykh's discipleship all talk of sinful acts had disappeared from the people.

The Sufi Shrine of Ajmer Paperback - 128 pages by Laxmi Dhaul

Often, when one visits an important or popular religious shrine or holy place in India, the mass of people, the heat, the dust the traffic and congestion overwhelm one. Invariably beggars and the poor get after you, and in the confusion and rush, one misses out on the spiritual and historical significance of the place. Often what started out as a pilgrimage, becomes an uncomfortable experience if done without some knowledge and background.
This book, is also dedicated to those who visit the Dargah for the first time and have heard about it but have no way of knowing about its significant and salient features. The daily rituals, the customs and what happens in the Urs (the death anniversary of the Saint) are therefore written about in great detail. I have also endeavoured a chapter on Sufism, to give an introduction on the Islamic Mysticism prevalent at the time and to describe the main tenets of the Chisti group of Sufis.
One of the nicest times to visit the Dargah is in the evening, when the decorative lights are lit up and the Qawali singers are in place bringing life to the place. The traffic is less, and the ambience reminds you of the presence of the great Sufi Saint. I have been fortunate enough to attend an Urs, and was lucky to be taken along with the mass of devotees right up inside the Sanctum Sanctorum, through the 'Gates of Paradise' and brought out again. My only effort was not to resist the surge and flow of humanity that took me right in and brought me right out, again with the grace of Khwaja Garib Nawaz.
Back Of The Book
Hadrat Khwaja Moinuddin Chisti's tomb lies in Ajmer in Rajasthan. He was one of the greatest Sufi saints and his Dargah is a centre of pilgrimage for thousands of people of all faiths. The Dargah complex is a conglomeration of various buildings. Places of worship and tombs of various people built over the last 750 years revealing the spiritual and historic importance of the place. Various Sufi rituals. The annual Urs and daily ceremonies held at the Dargah are a fascinating mix of different customs. The patronage of the Mughal. Rajput and Maratha emperors and kings have added tremendous variety and colour to the shrine as it is today. This book though based on the life of a Saint of the thirteenth century is extremely relevant even today for it deals with mysticism. Love. Unity, sacrifice, spirituality and secularism. The Saint's preachings are vibrant, even today, as they strengthen the fabric of love and unity amongst diverse faiths.
Laxmi Dhaul became interested in the Sufi saint of Ajmer through her personal experiences. She went to Ajmer for the first time in 1992. And subsequently she sent her three children to study at Mayo College, in Ajmer. Her interest and fascination for the Dargah grew during each visit she made to her children and to pay homage to the great saint. Miracles and prayers answered are a feature of the Ajmer Dargah and this alone attracts thousands of devotees daily.

The Lamp of Love - Journeying with the Sabri BrothersPaperback - 147 pages by Amatullah Armstrong Chishti DESCRIPTION :
This book recounts the unfolding of a dream and the journey that took the author from the midst of an Australian bushland paradise to the rapture of devotion at the Shrines of the Great Chishtiyya Sufi Saints in Pakistan and India. It is a story of the yearning and searching for the Beloved, a story of love and loneliness.
The book tells of the unfolding of the author’s spiritual connection to the Sufi saints of the Indo-Pak subcontinent and to Pakistan’s legendary qawwals, the Sabri Brothers. The narrative describes how she followed a dream that led to the discovery of spiritual treasures in both Pakistan and India, and of her direct experience of being engulfed in the ecstatic music of the Sabri Brothers.

Piri Muridi Relationship - A Study of the Nizamuddin Dargah Hardback - 354 pages The Relationship between a Spiritual Master (Shaykh) and his disciple (piri-muridi) becomes important when one witnesses day after day the large numbers of Muslims and non-Muslims flocking to spiritual masters/shaykhs (pirs) stationed at the various dargahs of India.
This work discovers that piri-muridi aims at making the disciple see God in all Things while very often allowing him to enjoy worldly success. This is achieved through a lengthy 'socialisation' process that spans a period of time ranging from twelve years to a lifetime. This socialisation process is very painful, and some disciples (murids) run away. Most, however, remain bound to their pir, by their vow of allegiance to him, the pir's friendliness, sympathy, material, magical and psychological assistance, and, when that is not enough, fear of his magical power. During this period the murid learns to fall in Love with the pir whom he strives to see as the representative of God, by observing, serving, and seeing the pir's Hand in everything that befalls him, and frequently recalling and concentrating on a mental Image of the pir while believing that his actions are prompted by the pir. Having thus attained union with the pir, he one day suddenly realises that the pir is just a curtain or veil that hides something else- that which he has truly loved all the time in the image of the pir is God himself. Roots of an everlasting impact of devotion lie in the lifestyle and teachings of Khwaja Moinuddin Chishti, May Allah be pleased with him, through himself and his representative disciples.
