The Secrets of Asceticism by Imam al-Qurtubi
Paperback - 152 pages Edited by Ahmad 'Ali al-'Adani
Description: Being the third part of al-Qasru'l-Hirs, al-Qurtubi May Allah be pleased with him deals with the issue of zuhd or “doing-without.” Zuhd is a central dimension of Islam, but Muslims in every age have faced the ingrained peril of distorting its meaning and its demands, and veer away from a sound understanding of it. This book not only restores a balance in the understanding of zuhd but offers practical advice of how to bring it into our lives. Special attention is given to the central issue of wealth, from the viewpoint of how to employ it legitimately, and of its being a test to Muslims.
In explaining this sacred state, al-Qurtubi explores many themes, including:
---The linguistic meaning of zuhd and the clarification of its essence;
---The means to attain control over the earthly plain and to exercise zuhd in it;
---The virtue of zuhd, and the fruits it produces;
---The states of those who exercise zuhd in this world;
---Some examples of zuhd by the Prophet Muhammad, upon whom be peace and blessings;
---Some examples of zuhd by the Prophet’s companions;
---The virtue of those who acquire ownership of wealth rightfully, and who spend out of it rightfully;
---The explanation of the Prophetic hadith: “Every nation has its peculiar test, and the test of my community is “belief lies in wealth.”
This book will be of interest to readers who wish to understand the centrality of zuhd to the Islamic tradition as written by one of the greatest Qur’anic commentators belonging to the Islamic civilisation.

Tafsir al-Qurtubi - Volume 1: Classic Commentary of the Noble Qur'an Hardback - 787 pages by Imam al-Qurtubi 'alayhir rahman w'al ridwan Translated by Aisha Bewley & Edited by Abdul Haqq Bewley
Description from the publisher: The publication of this volume represents a significant landmark in the history of Islamic literature in English. There has until now been a dearth of translations of classical tafsir [commentary] literature into English. With the first volume of this abridged translation of Imam al-Qurtubi's al-Jami' li-ahkam al-Qur'an ("The Compendium of Legal Rulings of the Qur'an"), an important step has been taken towards remedying this situation. It gives English-speaking readers access to one of the great classical commentaries, containing a wealth of authoritative traditional exposition of the Sacred Text.
Comprehensive interpretation of the Noble Qur'an requires consideration of every aspect -- spiritual, legal, linguistic, social, and others. While his Tafsir covers them all, Imam al-Qurtubi was especially concerned to bring out the legal implications of the Qur'anic text, and his work emphasises the practical applications of the Revelation. This gives it particular relevance to those interested in learning how the Qur'an informs the daily life of the Muslims, on both the individual and communal level. The author also explains the diversity of the various readings (qira'at) and explores the alternative interpretations that can be derived from them.
Imam Abu 'Abdullah Muhammad ibn Ahmad ibn Abu Bakr al-Ansari al-Qurtubi, was born in Cordoba, Spain, at the summlt of Its great period of Islamic civilisation. The most famous of then is his twenty-volume tasfir al Jami' li-ahkam al-Qur'an, the first three volumes of which are covered by this publication. Imam al-Qirtubi was a man of great modesty who disdained worldly honours and throughout his life wore the simple gown and cap of the ordinary Muslin. He traveled from Spain to the East and settled in Munya Abi 'l-Khusavb in Upper Egypt. where he died in 671H/ 1273 CE.

---- Death is not the absolute end. It is just the discontinuation of unity between the body and soul. It is a change from one state to another and a transition from this present life to that of the hereafter.
"Allah takes souls at the time of their death and [the souls] of those that do not die during their sleep. He retains those souls for which He has ordained death, whereas He releases the rest for an appointed term" [Qur'an 39:42] Imam Abu Abdullah Muhammad ibn Abu Bakr al-Ansari al-Qurtubi was born in Cordoba, Spain, at the summlt of Its great period of Islamic civilisation.
