In the Shadow of Saints : Sh.Hisham Kabbani

A wise person once said, ''Our bodies come new, but our spirits are ancient. When packaged together, this strange combination can work miracles.'' With today's issues of violence, lack of racial and religious tolerance and the void of spiritual leadership, people are falling away from the tenets of faith, as they are constantly failing to offer solutions and peace of mind. That is one of the many reasons why people today are adapting the 'new age' school of thought-seeking alternative means to find a light to guide them amidst the present spiritual darkness and material exuberance.                 Paperback - 73 pages

Hafiz - The Mystic Poets - trans by G.Bell

Admist all her influential activities in the Arabic world for which she is primarily and rightly remembered Gertrude Bell also compiled one of the early English translations of the Sufi poet Hafiz, who along with Rumi have recently become popularised in the West. On the poetry of Hafiz, Bell wrote:

“These are the utterances of a great poet, the imaginative interpreter of the heart of man: they are not of one age, or of another, but for all time”

In depicting the intensity of love, Gertrude Bell thought Hafiz comparable to the West’s own Shakespeare. Hardback - 125 pages            INCL. UK DELIVERY

The Subtle Blessings in the Saintly Lives of Abu al-Abbas al-Mursi
& His Master Abu al-Hasan
 Kitab Lata'if al-Minan fi Manaqib Abi 'l-Abbas al-Mursi wa Shaykhihi Abi 'l-Hasan
Paperback - 455 pages                                                       by Ibn 'Ata' Allah al-Iskandari

Laţā'if al-Minan ("Subtle Graces") by Ibn Ata 'Allah May Allah be pleased with him (d. 709 AH) might be described as a tribute by the author to the two great shaykhs who molded his spiritual life and vision, namely, Abū al-Ĥasan al-Shādhilī (d. 656 AH) and Abū al-'Abbās al-Mursī (d. 686 AH), the latter of whom Ibn 'Aţā' Allāh describes as "our master and companion, the pole of gnostics, the signpost of the rightly guided, the supreme apologist for Sufism, the travelers' guide, the rescuer of the perishing…he who speaks by the light of his flawless spiritual insight into [people's] secret thoughts…he who unveils the suns of knowledge after they have set and the secrets of subtle intimations after they have departed, he who has arrived in God and who assists others in doing the same."

Filled with anecdotes illustrating the shaykhs' spiritual gifts and insights, Laţā'if al-Minan is Ibn 'Aţā' Allāh's attempt to convey to his readers not only the beauty and inspiration of these men's lives and their utter devotion to God, but to help his readers themselves to enter into this same life of devotion and to experience its inimitable blessings.

For anyone desiring a vivid, lively exposition of the Sufi path as embodied in the lives of God's friends, the saints, together with their expositions of the prophetic traditions and Qur'anic passages which stayed their feet along the path, explanations of the divine realities, mystical stations and related enigmas, as well as specific phrases of divine remembrance (
dhikr) which Abū al-'Abbās used for himself and his disciples, Laţā'if al-Minan offers a delightful excursion through this inviting, albeit arduous, realm of body and spirit.

This deeply personal reminiscence of one man's growth in Islamic mysticism is a tribute to the two great shaykhs who molded his spiritual life and vision. Filled with anecdotes illustrating the shaykhs' spiritual gifts and insights, the text not only conveys the beauty and inspiration of these men's lives and their utter devotion to God, but also helps readers to enter this same life of devotion and experience its inimitable blessings. Sufi interpretations of Qur'anic passages and traditional Sufi spiritual litanies are included.

Death Before Dying : The Sufi Poems of Sultan Bahu

Paperback - 150 pages    Trans. by Jamal Elias

The 115 poems introduce readers in English to Sultan al-Arifeen Hadrat Sultan Bahu May Allah be pleased with him (d. 1691), a Sufi mystical poet who continues to be one of the most beloved writers in Punjabi. Sultan Bahu, whose name translates as "With God", remains highly popular in Pakistan and India today -- even illiterate Punjabis can recite his poetry by heart.

Jamal J. Elias's translation of Bahu's famous work, the Abyat, is the first to appear in English outside South Asia. It offers a rare glimpse into the Sufi mystical tradition and the religious lives of rural Muslims during the period of the Mughal Empire. With its emphasis on unrestricted devotion to God, and its skepticism toward the legalistic, institutionalized elements of organized religion, Bahu's poetry embodies many characteristic elements of the mystical tradition.

Translations of the poems are presented alongside the Punjabi script and offer a masterful exploration of a significant but largely neglected South Asian literary tradition. Death Before Dying also illustrates the great diversity of Islamic cultural voices throughout the world.

"With their earthy charm and engaging simplicity, these Punjabi verses convey the immediacy of the spiritual quest as expressed in the popular idiom and imagery of the country-side. A fine choice for courses in Islamic religious studies and spirituality". -- John Renard, author of Seven Doors to Islam

Product Description : This highly treasured book embodies the essence of spiritual life in the Islamic tradition. Its author, Ibn Ata'llah May Allah be pleased with him a well known Sufi saint and sage of the 13th century Egypt, lived during the flowering of new Sufi Orders. This Arabic work is in three parts - the maxims, the treatises and the intimate conversations. Victor Danner's new translation maintains the timeless quality of this work as an ever-fresh affirmation of the life in the spirit.

Intimate Conversation. One of the major early writers of Persian mystical literature, Kwaja Abdullah Ansari May Allah be pleased with him is best loved for his collection of simple flowing sentences long used as a devotional handbook. "Awakened Dreams" was written in the early 1900s (Ottoman era) by Ahmet Hilmi--humourist, revolutionary, & Sufi mystic. The 'Mirror Dede', makes more sense than anyone Raji has ever met. Raji' is transformed through a series of awakened dreams. He experiences changes of perception which show to him the limitations of our ordinary human faculties, and he encounters various Prophets and holy beings who reveal to him the secret of his own existence. The Unique Name & The Treasury of Truths of Shaykh Muhammad ibn-al-Habib
Pocket Paperback - 63 pages                                       by Shaykh Mustafa Ahmad al-Alawi

Section about the permissibility of 'Loud Dhikr' taken from opening page:

''Praise belongs to Allah and it is sufficient, and peace on His chosen slaves.

From the slave of his Lord, Ahmad ibn Mustafa al-'Alawi al-Mustaghanami.

Peace be upon you and the mercy of Allah and His blessings.

As for our subject, esteemed brother, I recall the discussion between us during your short visit when I saw you angered at your brothers the 'Alawiyun, as it seemed to me then, not for any wrong they do but just because they are infatuated with having the solitary name on their tongues, and that is their saying ALLAH.

It seemed to you that this requires reproof - we might even say punishment. And this, because they are committed to dhikr of that Name, with cause or without cause. It is the same for them in a dilemma or without one, in a situation not demanding invocation, so that when one of them knocks on the door he says, 'Allah,' and when he stands up he says, 'Allah,' and when he sits down he says 'Allah,' and so on.

You are of the opinion that it is improper to use this name as a dhikr, it not being a form of structured speech according to you - based on what grammarians stipulate as the necessities of grammatical construction in their definition of informative speech. There is no point in my answering you unless it is with the object of seeking mutual understanding and investigating whether what they do is right and proper, and whether it is permissible or not. I present you with this note that through it there may be healing for the breasts and cure for the hearts.

As for your stand on what grammarians lay down as the necessities of grammatical construction in what is considered speech, it is correct, except that the fact escapes you that in this decision of theirs the grammarians are concerned with discursive speech and are far from applying their definition to dhikrs and what distinguishes them from the point of view of lawfulness or unlawfulness, and then what results from that of rewards and the like. If you asked them in their day or this, they would certainly reply, "What we decide is merely a technical term on which we rely in our practice and there is no dispute in a technical term." You must be aware of the fact that the language of the grammarians is not the same as that of the scholars of kalam, and theirs is not the same as that of the fuqaha, nor theirs in turn that of the scholars of hadith and so on, for every group has its technical terms. For us, it follows from this that grammarians are simply concerned with defining informative speech, and are not concerned with distinguishing between legitimate and illegitimate dhikrs. In other words, what grammarians stipulate as the requirements of grammatical construction is particularly for someone who intends to communicate with someone else by his speech. As for someone who does dhikr, he only intends to benefit himself and establish the meaning of that noble Name in his heart through his dhikr, or a purpose of a similar nature.

These latter views happen to reveal that the self-styled wahhabism of the ghastly Saudi regime is simply an innovatory political position against Islam, and not even that of the historically known reformers.

The authors, Shaykh Abdu’l-Hayy al-‘Amrawi and Shaykh Abdu’l-Karim Murad, are enormously prestigious ‘ulema based at the great Qarawwiyyin Mosque of Fes. Lest anybody think that the militant opposition to Sufism has stopped or even abated, we should be aware that the Saudi regime—we cannot call them a government—continues to promote the Zindiq teachings which they themselves openly see as a war against Islam and the Muslim masses.

We would not have mentioned this issue but for a recent evidence that the Zindiq regime arrogantly continues its progress, as if its militant sector just over two years ago had not spent the night with prostitutes drinking vodka-sours in a bar before flying two airliners into the now notorious skyscrapers. Yet in November of last year the Zindiq regime sent a representative to harangue the respected Muslim Judicial Council of Cape Town and film himself for an official Saudi television station. The obese form of Mr. Wajdi al-Ghazzawi berated the Council with that insolence we have foolishly taken for granted among the thuggish exports of the regime. He learned his Islam inside Arabia and studied something he calls ‘Interfaith Dialogue’, itself an open door onto kufr. Apparently he is an imam at the Al‑Minshaawi Mosque in Makkah.

While the regime that funds him and which he upholds crashed about his ears, here he was in South Africa chattering on with all the official wahhabi denunciations of the very Muslim community he was visiting. Among his attacks, inevitably Mr. Al-Ghazzawi made his vulgar swipe at our noble Shaykh, Dr. Muhammad Alawi al-Maliki. Insultingly, he denounced him as a “big-time deviant”. He said he only attracted poor people (surely one of the virtues of the Deen), and that his teachings were refuted by “authentic scholars”. By the time young Wajdi had waddled out of Cape Town and returned to Makkah, he must have seemed a little surprised at what awaited him ---Shaykh Abdalqadir as-Sufi

The Silence of the Sufi      by Sabit Madaliev
Paperback - 174 pages

The Silence of the Sufi is a devotional work. Its author has called it a spiritual journey, or stranstvie, using a Russian word for wandering that is laden with literary, religious, & historical nuance. What is certain is that the ideas of love, sacrifice, & absence of self, as well as of divine and human purpose, which both underlie and find explicit expression in every part of this book, continue to strike a chord in our frequently confused and apparently purposeless modern or post-modern lives. This is a work of history; which the book serves to preserve & validate. In discreet segments: "On Listening Attentively," "On Gentle Words," "On Proper Posture" — it records & ruminates on Sufism as practiced in Central Asia across the centuries. Madaliev leads us into its historical & present-day practice among the Naqshbandiya with grace and elegance. Indeed, the historical and devotional aspects of the book —which could simply become dogmatic in the hands of another writer — are made beautiful and compelling here, partly by the author's poetic idiom, partly by his own uncertainty and sense of unworthiness in the search for God.

Inspiration
''Well, you have kept the fast and learned what it means to go hungry. Now leave your fire unlit for a day and find out what it is like for those who have no heat in their homes! Go without shoes some day; tread barefoot in the snow and ice to find out how it is for those who always go barefoot through the mud and slush! Leave your windows open one day and see what it is like to live in a house without them! Go out in the street without your coat some cold winters day, just to see how it is for those who have no coats at all! As long as your stomach is full, you will know nothing about the condition of the starving; as long as your house is warm, you will not understand the actions of those who live without heat; as long as your own feet are well shod, as long as you have thick clothes to wear, you will have no idea of the state of those who go barefoot and unclad.

Satisfy the hungry, so that Paradise may love you. Clothe the naked, so that you may not be bare on the coming day of Resurrection, when all the rest are naked. Become aware of the condition of all those paupers and orphans, for your own wife may become a pauper and your own children orphans. The wheel of fate turns. None of us knows what is to be : what great wealth may be doomed to extinction or how many, now despised, may rise to heights of dignity and honour."

The Book of Certainty               by (Martin Lings) aka Abu Bakr Siraj ad-Din

Paperback - 89 + xi (total 100) pages

The Sufi Doctrine of Faith, Vision and Gnosis

by ABU BAKR SIRAJ AD-DIN (also known as Martin Lings)

It came into being because the author was asked by a friend to set down in writing what he considered to be the most important things that a human being can know. He was also asked to make it very easy, and despite the depth of all that it contains, it has in fact a remarkable simplicity and clarity, due no doubt to the constant use of traditional imagery which awakens and penetrates the imagination.

A small extract (Chapter 2, Garden of Spirit) : When the Archangel Gabriel appeared to the Prophet on earth, he did so in the form of a man of the most marvellous beauty, for indeed the human eye was not created to receive ally more direct manifestation of the Truth than this, nor could the earth itself have endured the unmitigated presence of any heavenly power. But on the night journey, when the zenith of the seventh Heaven had been reached, all the Prophet’s possibilities had been as it were reabsorbed into his supreme spiritual plenitude which is named the Light of Muhammad (an-Naru’l-muhammadi); and with the Eye of this Light he was able to look upon that which he had never seen before, and indeed his sight now demanded no less an object of perception than the full unveiled glory of the Archangel. Twice only did he behold this wonder, both times during the night journey. The first vision was just before the Light of Muhammad was reabsorbed into the Light of the Essence, that is, just before his entry into the Divine Presence. The second vision was on his emerging from the Presence, before he and the Archangel had begun their return journey in descent through the different Heavens, that is, before the two splendours had begun to diminish (just as in ascent they had gradually increased), each in proportion to the diminishment of the other’s capacity for beholding. It is the full vision which is referred to in the following verses from the Chapter of the Star; and these verses express also Universal Alan’s direct consciousness that absolutely nothing is Independent of the Truth and that even the greatest glories of creation, for all their apparently self-sufficient brightness, are not in Reality to he separated from the Glory of the Creator:

And verily he saw him at another revelation, beside the lote-tree of the uttermost boundary, whereby is the Garden of Refuge. When there enshrouded the lote-tree That Which enshroudeth, the sight wavered not, nor did it transgress. Verily he saw, of the Signs of his Lord, the Greatest.  Qur’an, LIII: 13-18.

The Other Islam - Sufism and the Road to Global Harmony

Hardback - 285 pages                                                                  by Stephen Schwartz

This eye-opening, insightful exploration of Sufism, the spiritual tradition that has supported Islam for more than a thousand years, shows why it offers a promising foundation for reconciliation between the Western and Muslim worlds.

Many Americans today identify Islam with maniacal hatred of the West. The Other Islam transforms this image and opens the way to finding common ground in our troubled times. Sufism, a blend of the mystical and rational tendencies within Islam, emerged soon after the revelation of Muhammad, May Allah bless him and grant him peace. A reforming movement against the increasing worldliness of Muslim society, it focuses on Islam’s spiritual dimension.

In The Other Islam, Stephen Schwartz traces the origins and history of Sufism, elucidates its teachings, and illustrates its links to the other religions. He comments on such celebrated Sufi poets and philosophers as Rumi and Al-Ghazali, and narrates their influence on the Kabbalah, on the descendants of the Jewish philosopher Maimonides, and on Christian mystics like Saint John of the Cross and Saint Teresa of Ávila as well as the American transcendentalists.

Review:

Stephen Schwartz, author of the best-selling The Two Faces of Islam about Saudi Arabia and the bigoted Wahhabi cult, has recently published the story of Sufis in The Other Islam. The subtitle of Schwartz's book – Sufism and the Road to Global Harmony – is indicative of the importance of the subject in an era of Islamist terrorism and clash of civilizations.

In Schwartz's eloquent retelling of Islam's teachings through the lives of Sufi mystics – men and women who spare nothing of themselves in seeking to experience God in the here and now – the essential truth of Muhammad's, May Allah bless him and grant him peace, life shines forth.

Muhammad, May Allah bless him and grant him peace, was transfigured by his encounter with Abraham's God into a great soul and yet, as the Sufis address him, he remained the most loving friend and trusted master of every common seeker of God's compassion. --- Salim Mansour, Toronto Sun
