The twelfth-century Sufi Shihabuddun Yahya Al-Suhrawardi (1155-11 91 C.E., 549-587 A.H.) was the founder of the Illuminationist or Ishraqi school, a philosophy of "light" or intellectual intuition, influenced by Platonism, Hermeticism, and, especially, the teachings of Persian Sufi masters. Born in Azerbaijan, Suhrawardi spent most of his adult life in Persia, where he died at the age of 38, after being imprisoned by the authorities for his beliefs. He is the author of over 50 works in Arabic and Persian, including the treatise presented here and the work that is considered his masterpiece, Hikmat al-ishraq (The Theosophy of Illumination).

"How do souls differ from one another in the eternal realm?" This and other related matters are addressed in Suhrawardi's treatise, Hayakal al-Nur, which is arranged in seven categories called "Forms of Light." Points considered in this volume include the limitations of man's senses and his true or theomorphic essence; the nature and levels of the human soul and the various realms or Centers, the Nur al Muhammadi or Absolute Mind, as well as Ordinary Mind and Divine Mind, the nature of the firmaments; and the meaning of pleasure and pain.

Also included here: a preface drawn from the words of the twelfth-century saint and master (al-Ghawth al-A'zam) Abd al-Qadir al-Jilani May Allah sanctify his secret on the inner nature of the human heart, explicating the mystical Qur'anic verse on Light; an introduction by Shaykh Tosun Bayrak differentiating between mystical philosophy and the philosophy of Sufism; ten pieces of calligraphy of the Beautiful Names of Allah from the Grand Mosque (Ulu Cami) in Bursa, Turkey; and a Sufi fable in which a mysterious city becomes a metaphor for the layers of the human soul and for the created world, simultaneously.

Description : Awarif-ul-Ma'arif is is one of the oldest and most authentic books on tasawwuf (sufism). It is a manual for daily study and practice written by the the renowned thirteenth-century Sufi thinker, Shaykh 'Abu Hafs Umar al-Suhrawardi.

The treatise recognizes the primary importance of the Qur'an and the Hadith, and functions as a medium of interpretation for the primary texts.

The aim of the treatise is to assist the daily spiritual exercises and general intellectual development of the Suhrawardiyya members; it makes use of Quranic hermeneutics, Hadith commentary, rational arguments on epistemology, as well as discussing different levels of spirituality and proper manners. It also includes some severe critique of others orders and their interpretations of tasawwuf. In very many, if not all, of his arguments, Suhrawardi relies for authority upon Hadiths his own intimacy with the Prophet's way of life. The use of Hadiths in legal, philosophical, poetical, and religious contexts has long been known and understood. Their use in a Sufi spiritual manual is orientated toward presenting the way the Prophet, May Allah bless him and grant him peace, as a model for inward and outward actions. Suhrawardi's intensive use of the Hadiths is a significant element in the treatise, enabling its readers to remember and re-enact the Prophet's way so that they can move from merely imagining to actually embodying the Prophet's spirituality.
