Instruction of the Student : Method of Learning                       by Imam al Zarnuji

Paperback 76 pages                                                          Foreward by: Shaykh Hamza Yusuf

This is a remarkable volume that touches upon the method by which a student learns Islam in a meaningful and lasting way. Its author, Imam al-Zarnuji (May Allah be pleased with him), has attracted the attention of Western men of learning for centuries, as they tried to decipher the secret behind the stunning educational success of Islamic civilisation. Imam al-Zarnuji captured the essence of what it takes to be truly immersed in scholarship and the noble enterprise of learning.

Imam Muhammad ibn al-Hasan al-Shaybani
(May Allah be pleased with him) said: "Learn! for learning is an adornment for one who possesses it, a virtue and a prelude to every praiseworthy action. Profit each day by increasing [your] learning and swimming in the seas of beneficial knowledge. Give yourself up to the study of jurisprudence, for the knowledge of jurisprudence is the best guide to piety and the fear of God, and it is the straightest path to the ultimate goal. It is the milestone leading to the ways of proper guidance; it is the fortress that saves [one] from all hardships. Indeed, one godly person versed in jurisprudence is more powerful against Satan than a thousand [ordinary] worshippers."

"This book should be a starting point for the revival of the Islamic intellectual tradition that has always been the preamble to Islamic Renaissance," writes
Shaykh Hamza Yusuf in his foreword to the book.

The Adab of the True Seeker                                by Muhammad ibn Ahmad al-Buzaydi

Paperback - 105 pages                                                Translated with Introduction & Notes by Mokrane Guezzou

An authoritative Sufi manual on the proper conduct (adab) of a seeker on the spiritual path, written by one of the great North African Sufis, Shaykh Muhammad ibn Ahmad al-Buzaydi (d.1814) rahmatullahi 'alayhi.

This is lucid translation of al-Adab al-Murid al-Sadiq and includes some of his letters to his disciples. The Shadhili master explains the meaning and significance of the death of one's ego and the inner and outer propriety of the novice upon the Path.

The book provides an appreciation of Shaykh al-Buzaydi's method of spiritual training and his relationship with his students. It is, above all, a testimony as to why genuine Sufi masters are the heirs of the Beloved Prophet May Allah bless him and grant him peace.

Gifts for the Seeker                                     by Imam Abdallah ibn 'Alawi al-Haddad
Paperback - 75 pages                                          Translated from Arabic by Mostafa al-Badawi

Gifts for the Seeker - Ithaf i's sa'il : Revised addition

This book answers many of the questions often asked by seekers of inward illumination.  What are the real implications of the doctrine of divine unity?  How can proper concentration be achieved during spiritual exercises?  When should one avoid participating in Sufi gatherings?  What is the relationship between the tongue, the mind, and the heart?  How is one to understand visions received in sleep?  The work also includes the author’s commentary on a poem on inner wayfaring which speaks of the most exalted stations of the path and goes on to explain a number of paradoxes of the Way, such as the reason as why the saints usually refuse to deploy their miraculous powers, preferring to concentrate on self-scrutiny and the compassionate guidance of others.  These points are illustrated with references to the famous mystical poems of Ibn al-Farid and Abu Madyan.

The Course of the Seeker                                        by Omar Ali Shah

Paperback - 300 pages

This first collection of talks by the contemporary Sufi teacher Omar Ali-Shah was a milestone in Sufi literature, since for the first time a Sufi master was willing to openly share his "trade secrets" with his pupils, i.e., give a clear and uncluttered account of the various obstacles in contemporary life which prevent the seeker from achieving the lucidity we are all aiming for and which ought to be within our grasp, and also outline the group interactions and other techniques by which such a teaching is carried out.

This re-edited version of the book originally published in 1988 is completed with the addition of five new chapters dealing with the master/pupil relationship, clearly the biggest hurdle to acceptance of the Sufi Tradition in the western world, insofar as a Sufi envisages the intellectual mind, so idolized in western education, as an artisan considers a tool, i.e., a good servant but a poor master.

Excerpt:

--- It is a necessary function of the Tradition that a person’s individual characteristics, problems, energies and capacities should be allowed for within the context of the Tradition, and within one’s capacity to use it.

It is no good saying “Go off and read Jami, Hafiz, Saadi, Rumi” in the hope that a person will hit on something useful or which says something to them. This hit-and-miss type of thing causes confusion and makes people despondent: they blame themselves, the technique, somebody else, and of course everything ends in tears. ---

The Degrees of the Soul                            by Shaykh Abd Al-Khaliq Al-Shabrawi
Paperback - 76 pages        Spiritual Stations on the Sufi Path (Classics of Muslim Spirituality)

Translated from the Arabic by Mostafa al-Badawi

Description from the publisher:

This book unlocks the secrets of the seven degrees through which the soul progresses as it travels the Sufi path to its Lord.

It teaches the novice how to transform the Inciting Soul, the lowest and the most egotistic of the self's manifestations, into the Reproachful Soul, which must then become Inspired, Serene, Contented, and Found Pleasing, until it attains the ultimate degree of sanctity and wholeness as the Perfect Soul. To achieve this progressive purification of the self, special Sufi practices, litanies, and attitudes of mind are recommended.

Both practical and profound, this book offers a concise manual of Sufi teaching on the way to spiritual liberation.

The author, Shaykh Abd al-Khaliq al-Shabrawi (1887-1947), was employed as a professor at Al-Azhar University in Cairo, but was best known as a realised master of the great Khalwati Order of Sufis. A tireless worker for spiritual unity and harmony, he was also initiated into the Shadhili and Naqshbandi Orders.

The Sun will Rise in the West - The Holy Trail

Paperback - 156 pages                                                  by Sayyid as-Shaykh Taner al-Ansari

The Sun Will Rise in the West is a primer on Sufism, written especially for Western readers who are looking for a comprehensive explanation of the principles and practice of this ancient spiritual path. This book also serves those who may be familiar with Sufism and wish to further their quest for a practical application of the tenets of this time-honoured spiritual system in a modern world.

In this inspiring book written specifically for the Western reader, Shaykh Taner Ansari synthesizes his wisdom of the Sufi path for knowing and loving God. This study of Sufism serves as a guide for finding your purpose and acting according to it. To the Sufi, actions, thoughts, feelings, spoken words, all transmit vibrational patterns which produce reactions in the universe.

The goal is to understand which reactions please the Creator as opposed to which please only one's ego. The Sufi route to this goal is via the heart, for love is the medium of Unity necessary for a connection between a person and the Divine.

The book discusses the practices that open a student's inner organs of perception to an expanded world of radiance which is normally unseen.

The Shaykh serves as the guide and protector on this journey and the book clearly describes the responsibilities of both the Shaykh and the Sufi student.

Piri Muridi Relationship  -  A Study of the Nizamuddin Dargah

Hardback - 354 pages

The Relationship between a Spiritual Master (Shaykh) and his disciple (piri-muridi) becomes important when one witnesses day after day the large numbers of Muslims and non-Muslims flocking to spiritual masters/shaykhs (pirs) stationed at the various dargahs of India.

This work discovers that piri-muridi aims at making the disciple see God in all Things while very often allowing him to enjoy worldly success. This is achieved through a lengthy 'socialisation' process that spans a period of time ranging from twelve years to a lifetime. This socialisation process is very painful, and some disciples (murids) run away. Most, however, remain bound to their pir, by their vow of allegiance to him, the pir's friendliness, sympathy, material, magical and psychological assistance, and, when that is not enough, fear of his magical power.

During this period the murid learns to fall in Love with the pir whom he strives to see as the representative of God, by observing, serving, and seeing the pir's Hand in everything that befalls him, and frequently recalling and concentrating on a mental Image of the pir while believing that his actions are prompted by the pir. Having thus attained union with the pir, he one day suddenly realises that the pir is just a curtain or veil that hides something else- that which he has truly loved all the time in the image of the pir is God himself.
